Meet the Pros

In 1985, representatives of Gatorade Thirst Quencher and Scholastic Coach magazine met to develop a unique athlete award program. Their goal was simple:

Honor America's elite high school athletes who have succeeded on and off the field in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The program they created, The Gatorade High School Player of the Year, has become the most prestigious athletic award in the nation.

Gatorade recognizes outstanding athletes in 10 sports: football, basketball, baseball, soccer and track & field for boys, and volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball and track & field for girls. For each sport, a State Player of the Year is selected by the Gatorade Advisory Board, made up of sport-specific experts and sport writers from across the nation. While athletic success is a major factor in choosing the best all-around high school athletes, academics and overall character are also vital selection criteria.

It's widely recognized that young adults involved in sports have a better chance of succeeding later in life. As the nation's leader in sports drinks, Gatorade is committed to the development and recognition of young athletes through the High School Player of the Year Award Program.
